    An easy way to automate the door opening would to be to attach a remote controlled winch to the cable and mount on the wall up and out of the way. A small 2500 lbs winch would be small and do the trick. Harbor freight here in the US sells one for $79.99. Just a thought.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 7 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment. However, the difficulty in automating this door is not the raising and lowering but the unlocking, pushing open the first few inches/centimetres and then pulling shut and locking.

    Hello J & D, thank you for providing the contact details of the Adelaide-based supplier. I had just posted a question about the supplier and then went scrolling down through the messages and found out that you had already very kindly provided their address. Thank you for the video. I bought my lathe years ago and just decided to dust it off. Seeing how to use the lathe was a great refresher. Kind regards Lionel

    Thanks for the video. But you didn't show the wiring of wall control and the remote.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 18 днів тому

      Yeah, it was hit or miss at best. Interpreting the wiring instructions so that I could have two switches, mounted next to each other and using a common power feed, control fans that are spaced 20 feet apart almost did my head in. It was much simpler once I understood that a single switch can control any number of fans. The fans are fed power directly from a breaker as are the switches…fan operation is via a radio signal from the switch. I wanted the ability to control the fans independently so I kept both switches. Getting the west fan paired with the west switch and vice versa was the really difficult part. The fan not being paired needed to be disconnected from power.

    will the front part of chassis with engine be disconnectable for maintenance

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd Місяць тому

      Technically, yes; at least as much as it ever was. However, the front sub-chassis will now be supporting everything except the rear wheels and disconnecting it won't help gain access to much of anything that can't already be readily accessed. There will be a lot of room around the engine without doing anything and I will have an engine cover over the top should I want to work on the ignition or fueling.

      Thanks Bob. My back seems right already but I'm following doctors orders and limiting exertion until six weeks post op has elapsed. On your point of restoring the RV, I really am a fan of the effort that went into the design. Time has proven that it was a solid chassis. Having said that, there isn't much restoration happening. This is a reconfiguration into something else.

    Hi Jim! This video is fantastic! Very informative and functional!! I’m looking into building something similar for my patio. The door is only 4’x7’, for motorcycles, but I’m building it with wood. Might you have any recommendations for those amazing pivot points? Cheers!

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd Місяць тому

      Your door can be pretty light duty but I guess you'll need to take weather into account if it is an external door. Wind loading can be a significant strain but the size you're talking about isn't much bigger than a normal door into a house. Flashing around the edges will help keep wind out. Hinges? I just used barn hinges at the top (2x) and good heavy door hinges in the middle (5x). I don't think any hinges will fail for a door that size anyway but still, take care that the fasteners you're using are secure as I think that would be the first failure point. You can probably get away with 35x70 wood for the door frame too.

    Try adding some more u joints to the bottom of the motorhome steering column you have enough space to add 1or 2joints and they are easily added with minimal work.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 2 місяці тому

      That would work if I only had to deal with the angle between the column and the box but it would actually make it worse in regards to the angle of the column in regards to the driver. The column is just too long. I’ve come up with a plan to shorten the column which has advantages of allowing me to reduce the angle between column and box as well as allowing better placement of the box to the frame.

    Hello! I love this design and am going to attempt it myself in the next week and half. I was trying to see the diagram at the end of the video but it is not very clear. If I have X width and Y height and Z height for the hinges. What is the best formula for figuring my panel sizes? Figuring my hinges at the very top are about 33 inches away from the top of my door opening.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 2 місяці тому

      It’s as simple as the middle hinges (pivots) are 1/2 distance between top and bottom pivots. The complications arise from the top and middle pivots being outside while the bottom pivot is probably inside a wall that is N inches thick and probably some distance above the floor. You might be able to work out your X Y Z locations by mocking up a two dimensional proof of concept using some of the structure material you intend to use for the actual door…just on one edge of the door opening. A successful design will shut flat while having a balanced wedge when fully open.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 3 місяці тому

      the bearing just outboard the big bull gear? And you’ve used a puller…I mean a proper puller? My “puller” was the wrong tool for the job and I acknowledge I was lucky the bearing came free. If even a puller made for this job doesn’t work the bearing may need to be cut off. You might want to try heat onto the inner bearing race but that has risks of damaging everything around it. Sorry, I don’t know other options.

    Is that piece you welded straight/level? It appears to have a bow from the camera angle. It could just be the vantage point we see it from. I like this build and have watched you tear down the RV and the Fire Truck to get to this point. Also, I was wondering will this have a flip nose to service the engine or just access from inside and underneath the truck.

    • @madebyjnd
      @madebyjnd 3 місяці тому

      I’m not going to say it was perfect but the various contact points are as close to straight and true as I can get using beat-up second hand material. There is no flipping in the forecast. Several others have wondered about this and it’s in the back of my mind but the priority is just to build a functioning vehicle. You’ve watched all 20 episodes? Sheesh, thanks…that’s over 10 hours.
